P60: End of Year Certificate

The annual summary of your pay and deductions.

What is a P60?

A P60 is a statement issued by taxpayers to employees at the end of the tax year. It summarises your total pay and deductions (like tax and National Insurance) for the year.

Key Dates

Your employer must provide your P60 (either on paper or electronically) by 31 May, following the end of the tax year on 5 April.

Why is it important?

You will often be asked for a P60 as proof of your income. You need it to:

  • Claim back overpaid tax.
  • Apply for tax credits.
  • Apply for a mortgage or secure a loan.

Common Mistake: Discarding it

Many employees treat the P60 like a standard payslip and throw it away. Keep it safe for at least 22 months after the end of the tax year it relates to, as HMRC can investigate up to that point.
